![]() ![]() When I opened the email, my excitement grew. ![]() Seeing Soutar’s name in my inbox was a thrill in its own right: he is the translator of Juan Tomás Ávila Laurel’s widely acclaimed By Night the Mountain Burns, only the second book to make it into English from Equatorial Guinea and my pick for Book of the month a year or so ago. You can imagine, then, how pleased I was when I got an email from translator Jethro Soutar a few weeks ago. It’s especially pleasing when these titles are from countries whose literature I struggled to access in 2012 – places like Turkmenistan, Panama and Madagascar (which should soon have its first complete translated novel published in English). Hearing about new translations coming from nations that are underrepresented in the English-language literary world is always exciting. ![]()
